![]() ![]() Salts are frequently used for de-icing, but salt solutions are not used for cooling systems because they induce corrosion of metals. Salts lower the melting points of aqueous solutions. To address these problems, alternative coolants with improved properties were developed.įreezing and boiling points are colligative properties of a solution, which depend on the concentration of dissolved substances. It however has only a 100 ☌ liquid range, and it expands upon freezing. It is cheap, nontoxic, and has a high heat capacity. Water was the original coolant for internal combustion engines. Most if not all commercial antifreeze formulations intended for use in heat transfer applications include anti-corrosion and anti- cavitation agents (that protect the hydraulic circuit from progressive wear). Careful selection of an antifreeze can enable a wide temperature range in which the mixture remains in the liquid phase, which is critical to efficient heat transfer and the proper functioning of heat exchangers. ![]() Commercially, both the additive (pure concentrate) and the mixture (diluted solution) are called antifreeze, depending on the context. The purpose of antifreeze is to prevent a rigid enclosure from bursting due to expansion when water freezes. īecause water has good properties as a coolant, water plus antifreeze is used in internal combustion engines and other heat transfer applications, such as HVAC chillers and solar water heaters. However, all common antifreeze additives also have lower heat capacities than water, and do reduce water's ability to act as a coolant when added to it. Common antifreezes also increase the boiling point of the liquid, allowing higher coolant temperature. An antifreeze mixture is used to achieve freezing-point depression for cold environments. The manual says it's ok to use Motorcraft premium engine coolant (green colored) VC-4-A OR Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Colloant VC-7-A (My bottle says VC-3DIL-B).Coolant additive which reduces the freezing point of waterĪn antifreeze is an additive which lowers the freezing point of a water-based liquid. The confusing part to me is that I'm not sure if it's telling me I can or can not use WSS-M97B44-D. It says not to mix an orange colored (the color of the coolant I bought is orange) Extended life (mine is NOT extended) such as Motor Crat Specialty orange coolant, VC-2 (mine says VC-3) meeting ford specification WSS-M97B44-D (the back of the coolant bottle I have matches this number and says for use in Ford meeting Ford Specification WSS-M97B44-D or WSS-M97B44-D2. The wording under the Do not use section is a little confusing to me. To start, I am in the US so i'm going to leave out the canadian parts of the manual. He took a very quick glance at it and the grabbed me a bottle.Īfter I got home I started to worry that it was the kind that is specifically stated not to be used in my expedition.Īttached is the manual, the front of the bottle of the coolant and the back label of the coolant that i got. I brought in the manual to the auto parts store and had the page tagged about the type of coolant that can and can't be used in my vehicle. ![]() I bought some coolant for my 2003 Ford Expedition 4X4 XLT 5.4L. ![]()
